Side is first mentioned in the Periplus of Pseudo-Scylax in the mid-4th century BC; Strabo and Arrian say it was founded by Greek settlers from Cyme in Aeolis, most likely in the 7th century BC. Alexander the Great took it without a fight in 333 BC, and between 188 and 36 BC the city minted its own tetradrachms. After Pompey brought it under Rome in 67 BC, Side prospered on the olive oil trade and grew to 60,000 people. Abandoned by the 10th century, it was resettled in 1895 by Cretan newcomers who founded Selimiye among the ruins.
