What to know about Netanya
Netanya is a young city: after water was found on the purchased land in February 1929, the first five settlers of the Bnei Binyamin association moved in. It was named after philanthropist Nathan Straus (1848–1931), co-owner of Macy's. In 1933 British architect Clifford Holliday planned Netanya as a seaside resort, and its first hotel opened that year. The Ophir plant, the first diamond polishing works in Palestine, opened in 1939. Netanya became a local council in 1940, headed by Oved Ben-Ami, and a city on 3 December 1948. Kiryat Sanz was founded on the northern shore in 1956; in the 1990s the city absorbed many immigrants from the former Soviet Union and Ethiopia, and later thousands of newcomers from France.
Notable people of Netanya
Krav Maga founder Imi Lichtenfeld (1910–1998) opened a sports academy here, and Rabbi Yekusiel Yehudah Halberstam (1905–1994) founded Kiryat Sanz with its schools and hospital. Gymnast Artem Dolgopyat (born 1997), the 2020 Olympic floor champion, was born in Dnipro, Ukraine, and lives in Netanya. Miss World 1998 Linor Abargil (born 1980) is also linked to the city.

The Well House museum, in a building from 1928, tells the city's early story, the Diamimon museum its diamond tradition, while the Irises Dora Rainpool park protects the world's largest population of Iris atropurpurea.
