A short history of Izmail
Izmail traces its founding to a charter of Sultan Murad III dated 14 November 1589, which instructed Mehmed Habishi Agha to set up a Danube crossing at Ismail Gedichi and found a town and harbour nearby. First called Mehmedabad, the settlement was known as Ismail by the early 17th century. In 1609 Cossacks under Petro Sahaidachnyi captured Izmail along with Kiliia and Bilhorod during a sea campaign. In the 18th century it was a key Ottoman fortress on the imperial frontier, stormed several times, including in 1790. On 26 October 1812 Izmail became a town under the name Tuchkov, and its historical name returned in 1856. From 7 December 1940 it was the centre of Izmail Oblast. In June 2025 a memorial plaque honouring fallen defender of Ukraine Hennadii Stepanov was unveiled at Izmail Gymnasium No. 10.
