What to know about Halkidiki
Halkidiki (Chalkidiki) is a peninsula and regional unit of Central Macedonia, Greece, with its capital at Polygyros and 102,085 residents in the 2021 census. It is named after Chalcis in Euboea, whose settlers colonised the area in the 8th century BC; later Philip II annexed it to Macedon. In 885 a chrysobull of Emperor Basil I proclaimed Mount Athos a place of monks, the Great Lavra was founded soon after, and Athos has been self-governing ever since. The Ottomans took the region in 1430, and in 1912–1913 it joined the Kingdom of Greece. Holidaymakers, first from Thessaloniki, began arriving in the late 1950s, and tourism became the main industry in the 1980s. In June 2003 EU leaders presented the first draft of the European Constitution at the Porto Carras resort.

Athos has strong Ukrainian ties: the polemicist Ivan Vyshensky (c. 1550 – after 1620) arrived in the late 1570s and lived there for the rest of his life apart from a return to Ukraine in 1604–1606, and the Poltava-born elder Paisius Velichkovsky (1722–1794) spent about 17 years on the Holy Mountain from 1746. Singer Sokratis Malamas was born in Sykia in 1957.
