What to know about Yemilchyne

Yemilchyne is known from about 1585, when the Zhytomyr town records list it as a property of Prince Kostiantyn Ostrozkyi; until the late 19th century it was called Mezhyrichka. It later belonged to the Lubomirski princes and, from 1812, to the Uvarov counts. Around 1820 Sergei Uvarov founded a porcelain factory here that worked until 1852, and the town took the name Emilchyne after Count Uvarov's daughter Emilia. In 1890 its iron foundry was the largest in Volhynia. It was a district centre from 1923 to 2020. Locals honour sergeant Serhii Sahan (1982–2015), who died defending Ukraine.

Yemilchyne today

The town lies on the Ubort River where the Berestok flows into it, with a 10th-century burial mound on the right bank. In the centre stand the Obelisk of Glory and a memorial sign to Taras Shevchenko, and a local history museum keeps the town's story.
