Bia?ystok in brief
Bia?ystok's story begins around 1437, when Jakub Tabutowicz received wilderness land along the Bia?a River from Michael ?ygimantaitis. The Wiesio?owski family, owners from 1547, founded the first school; in 1661 the estate went to Stefan Czarniecki and then to the Branicki family. In 1692 Stefan Miko?aj Branicki obtained city rights from King John III Sobieski. In the 18th century Hetman Jan Klemens Branicki turned the palace into a grand residence, earning the city the name 'Versailles of Podlachia'; Poland's first military technical school opened here in 1745 and the Komedialnia theatre in 1748. The Warsaw–Saint Petersburg railway (1862) made Bia?ystok a major textile centre, the 'Manchester of the North'. Since 1999 it has been the capital of Podlaskie Voivodeship.
