What to know about Athens

Athens has more than 3,400 years of recorded history: by 1400 BC it was an important Mycenaean centre with a fortress on the Acropolis. The reforms of Cleisthenes introduced democracy in 508 BC, and in the Golden Age guided by Pericles the Parthenon rose on the Acropolis. In the 2nd century AD the Roman emperor Hadrian, himself an Athenian citizen, added a number of public buildings. Athens replaced Nafplio as the capital of independent Greece in 1834, hosted the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and the Summer Olympics again in 2004. Kyiv lists Athens among its partner cities since 1996.

Famous Athenians

Athens was the city of the philosopher Socrates (c. 470–399 BC), of his student Plato (c. 428–347 BC), founder of the Academy, and of the statesman Pericles (c. 495–429 BC), who led the city in its Golden Age.
