What to know about Alanya
Alanya's story goes back to antiquity: as Korakesion it is mentioned in the 4th-century BC Greek periplus of Pseudo-Scylax. In 1221 the Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Kayqubad I captured the city, which was then renamed Alaiye after him. The Seljuk era was its golden age, when Alanya served as a winter capital, and the citadel on the peninsula dates from 1226. Gedik Ahmed Pasha brought the city into the Ottoman Empire in 1471, and during his visit on 18 February 1935 Mustafa Kemal Atat?rk finalised the modern name Alanya.
Notable people of Alanya
Poet and writer Onat Kutlar (1936–1995), founder of the Istanbul International Film Festival, was born in Alanya.
Landmarks and local character
The city sits on a rocky peninsula between the Taurus Mountains and the Mediterranean, on the Turkish Riviera 133 km east of Antalya. Alanya Castle crowns the harbour, beside the 33-metre K?z?l Kule (Red Tower) with its ethnographic museum and the Seljuk Tersane shipyard of 1221; Damlata? Cave and Cleopatra Beach lie on the west side, and Atat?rk's House and Museum is in town. Tourism dates from 1958, when the first modern motel opened; lemons and oranges grow around the city, and Alanya Jazz Days has been held at K?z?l Kule since 2002. What to Choose in the Catalog
The classics are red roses and 101 roses. For a softer mood choose spray roses or hydrangeas, and for a practical gift, flowers in a box. By occasion: birthday flowers, flowers for her, flowers for mom.
